Brazilian composer Lô Borges has passed away.

Brazilian musician and composer Lô Borges has passed away.

The news was confirmed via a statement from his family, shared on Lô Borges’s official social media accounts. The musician had been hospitalized due to a drug-related infection; he was 73 years old.

      The statement reads:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Lô Borges, aged 73, on Sunday night (02/11/25), in Belo Horizonte-MG. He fought valiantly for 17 days but is now at rest. His art will endure forever.”

The family requests privacy during this time to mourn privately and expresses gratitude in advance for all expressions of love and solidarity.

Born Salomão Borges Filho in 1952 in Belo Horizonte, the musician created music with friends, forming an informal group in their neighborhood known as the “corner club,” which fused MPB (música popular brasileira) with emerging elements of jazz, pop, rock, and baroque influences reminiscent of The Beatles.

Released in 1972, ‘Clube da Esquina’ became a foundational work in modern Brazilian music, its inherent freedom standing in stark contrast to the ruling junta, resonating with the country's disillusioned youth while showcasing a beautiful musical vocabulary.

Lô Borges then produced a series of solo albums, gaining international acclaim along the way. Though his prominence waned in the late 90s, he experienced a resurgence in 2003 with the song ‘Dois Rios,’ co-written with the Brazilian ska-punk band Skank.

His band mate and long-time collaborator Milton Nascimento stated: “Lô will leave us with an immense void and a profound sense of loss, and Brazil has lost one of its most brilliant, innovative, and distinct artists.”
