With ‘Are You Dreaming?’, the Essex-London quartet She's In Parties presents an EP that immerses listeners in a vivid dream, residing in the hazy realm between reality and fantasy. Expanding on the foundation of 2023's ‘End Scene’ and 2024's ‘Puppet Show’, the band effortlessly blends melancholic shoegaze, ethereal dream-pop, and introspective indie grit. The opening track ‘Fallen’ introduces the experience with grand ambition, propelled by urgent, theatrical keys that gradually give way to sparkling guitars and gentle, blurred vocals. This marks a significant departure from the shoegaze elements of their previous music, steering the band further into dream-pop territory. In contrast, ‘Same Old Story’ remains closest to their original sound, making it an ideal lead single and a subtle nod to their origins. Additionally, ‘Runaway’ shines with uplifting melodies reminiscent of early Wolf Alice or Pale Waves, while the final track ‘R.E.M.’ brings the collection full circle, fading into something lighter and almost ethereal. The five tracks are steeped in nostalgia but maintain a sense of originality, radiating authenticity and cinematic depth.

Breakups — both romantic and involving a major label record deal — have done little to diminish the enchantment at the core of piri & tommy. Instead, the changes have enhanced the melodic pop that consistently underlay their sweet, UK garage-influenced sound, while adding an element of sunny, syrupy funk to their music. Their Y2K-inspired groove permits a more playful, retro opulence compared to earlier projects, yet the familiarity remains intact: the rich Euro-house and drum’n’bass elements in the title track ‘magic’ are just as distinctly piri & tommy as they are innovative and luxurious. Other tracks thrive comfortably under the vibrant heat of a funk-pop aesthetic (notable examples include the stylish groove of ‘Venus’; the beachy elevator vibe of ‘tom & zendaya’; and the Michael Jackson-like vocal style of ‘locked up’). Like most changes, this evolution is often essential, and here, Britain’s response to Magdalena Bay demonstrates they are more attuned to their vision and future than they’ve ever been. ‘magic!’ is poised to embrace a bit of the unusual while maintaining the effortless cool established by prior works.
