Soft branches shudder above, as dirt, bark, wind, and breath converge in a confined, eager space. An electrifying voice breaks through the underbrush, propelled by waves of fervent overdrive and pulsating drums with a volcanic intensity. Izzy Outerspace’s “Closer” strikes like an exposed nerve – a personal, internal reckoning set against a cinematic, passionate, and turbulent alternative backdrop. The guitars roar; melodies blaze brightly and fervently; the drums thump heavily, the rhythm oppressive and relentless. Isabelle Baumgartner’s voice pulsates with life, revealing raw emotions in real-time. It aches; it resonates; it is unapologetic, dynamic, and undeniably dramatic – and oh, is it dramatic. “Closer” is not a mere whisper of desire; it’s a comprehensive confessional.

Atwood Magazine proudly debuts “Closer,” the lead single and music video from Izzy Outerspace’s anticipated alternative album A Romance Truly Tried, scheduled for release in 2026. Mixed and mastered by Josiah Mazzaschi at Cave Studio LA and recorded by Christian Paul Philippi, “Closer” signifies a bold new chapter for the Swiss-born, Los Angeles-based artist. Following her 2024 Lip Service EP and 2025’s Dreamstate EP (produced by former Smashing Pumpkins member Jeff Schroeder), this song serves as the initial glimpse into an album that probes deeper, strikes harder, and embraces the more chaotic aspects of love, desire, and emotional intensity.
“I appreciate how songwriting connects me to an unconscious part of myself, and how each listener can interpret a song differently. Music is powerful in that way,” Baumgartner shares with Atwood Magazine. This sense of enigma and variety permeates “Closer.” It feels like a dialogue with someone you can’t quite grasp – and with the portion of yourself that stubbornly desires them regardless. “Tell me / I want to know / or rest in the unknown” teeters between confrontation and surrender, craving clarity while acknowledging the comfort of ambiguity.

you’re a
human fly
on the wall
i still think
about throwing
that leash
i just wanted to
keep you closer
As the song progresses, its tension intensifies. Baumgartner’s lyrics oscillate between unsettling and personal – “keep your pupils small / you’re a human fly on the wall” – depicting her subject as an elusive presence, always close yet never fully there. The repeated refrain, “I just wanted to keep you closer, closer,” transforms the chorus into a mantra of desire, resignation, and raw emotional need. Her voice rides the distortion with a searing intensity, teetering at the edges to allow the ache to seep through. It’s chaotic, emotionally charged, an alt-rock fever that never relents.
The accompanying music video, filmed and edited by Molly Koch, remains grounded and immediate. Shot outdoors among trees and lush greenery, it neither over-explains nor imposes a narrative; instead, it offers an unfiltered, intimate glimpse of Izzy Outerspace and her bandmates – Tommy Oerding on drums and Clifton Weaver on bass – immersed in the song’s tempest. Nature frames the chaos, serving as a vibrant backdrop as they thrash, sweat, and smolder through Baumgartner’s inner struggle.

That performance embodies the emotional essence of “Closer.” Baumgartner sings as though she’s clawing her way to the truth – or away from it – with every strained breath and heated crescendo. The production enhances that volatility, allowing the guitars to snarl, the bass to grind, and the drums to penetrate the mix without smoothing over the song’s rough edges. It’s dramatic in the finest sense: grand feelings, vast sounds, and a sense of immediacy that makes the entire piece feel palpably alive.

Born and raised in Switzerland and now residing in Los Angeles, Baumgartner grew up surrounded by Britpop, German punk, and the profound emotional resonance of picking up the guitar later in life. “I’ve always perceived it as a meditative process,” she explains. “I aim to create music that feels like entering another realm where you might lose yourself.” Over recent years - spanning
