Scottish songwriter Iona Zajac has released her debut album ‘Bang’ in its entirety.
Iona has already had a remarkable journey in music, whether as a member of the influential folk group Avocet or through her own solo ventures. She was invited to join The Pogues for their 40th anniversary celebration of ‘Red Roses For Me,’ highlighting her ability to draw from a wide array of experiences.
Available now via Post Electric, her debut album ‘Bang’ offers a refreshingly varied listening experience. The record is consistently engaging and unique, while still showcasing a cohesive character in Iona's work.
At times, her folk influences are evident, while other moments showcase a polished alt-pop sound; all of this is unified by a strong sense of intention. Iona notes...
"I didn’t consciously approach this album with a blueprint, but if you look at songs like ‘Bowls,’ ‘Dilute,’ and ‘Anton,’ they’re akin to sisters at different points of processing something negative. They were created during different times; ‘Bowls’ conveys a broader sense of anger regarding violence against women.
‘Dilute’ stems from my own teenage experiences, while ‘Anton’ narrows in on themes of relationships and intimacy. They serve as the weight that grounds the album alongside lighter moments I wanted to include, showcasing how surreal my processing methods can be. I believe it’s very Scottish to handle sadness with humor."
Tune in now.
