A passionate performance that revitalizes some of their most cherished songs...
It has been a diverse time for Australian legend Nick Cave. Following the release of ‘Wild God,’ his 18th album with The Bad Seeds in 2024, he successfully adapted his novel The Death of Bunny Munro, featuring music composed by Cave and his long-time collaborator Warren Ellis. Cave is also in contention for an award for an original track from the highly acclaimed film Train Dreams. His most recent project is the live album titled ‘Live God,’ which captures the essence of the Wild God tour. It's a triumphant, spirited display of his live performances, demonstrating that at nearly 70, he still has much to give.
The album showcases tracks from Cave’s four-decade career, featuring beloved songs such as ‘O Children,’ ‘Red Right Hand,’ and the timeless ‘Into My Arms,’ which benefit from his slightly worn vocals, enhanced by a moving crowd sing-along. The collection reflects the variety of styles Cave has explored, ranging from gothic and baroque influences to ballads and post-punk. It all merges harmoniously in this compilation, further highlighting his prowess as a live performer. Many tracks are extended beyond their studio durations, granting them newfound energy as live epics.
Cave’s interpretation of Elvis mythology in ‘Tupelo’ lasts just under eight minutes and is a fierce, intense piece. It brims with passion, and Nick Cave’s vocals effectively convey its rawness. ‘Red Right Hand’ is similarly expanded, now more powerful than its studio rendition, recently made famous by Peaky Blinders. The brief yet exquisite ‘As The Waters Cover The Sea’ concludes the album on a soft note, beautiful in its simplicity.
This album blends classic hits with fresh material from various stages of his career; it serves as an ideal showcase for Cave’s extensive back catalogue and is likely to attract those who have not yet witnessed this icon live, who continues to exhibit remarkable energy. With 18 diverse and energetic tracks that traverse themes of darkness and light, as is typical of Cave’s music, there are no weak links present. It stands as a testament to his artistry and ongoing creativity.
