Returning, Reflecting, Reclaiming: A Discussion with Verivery

To say that VERIVERY's latest comeback was eagerly awaited would be an understatement. It has been two and a half years since their last release, which featured the smooth yet catchy song ‘Crazy Like That’. During this time, the group has renewed their contracts, completed member Dongheon’s military service, explored various acting opportunities, and participated in the globally popular survival show Boys II Planet.

As they approach their seventh year together, they return with ‘Lost and Found’, a three-track release led by ‘RED (Beggin’)’. This single includes an interpolation of The Four Seasons’ 1967 hit ‘Beggin’, blending VERIVERY’s unique style into a vibrant, energizing track.

Before the release of Lost and Found, we had a conversation with the group's current lineup – Dongheon, Gyehyeon, Yeonho, Yongseung, and Kangmin (with Hoyoung and Minchan currently on hiatus) – via Zoom to discuss their comeback, reflect on the past seven years, and express their hopes for the future.

      —

To start, can you share a bit about your new single album, ‘Lost and Found’?

Yeonho: After a break of two and a half years, this album is about reclaiming what we lost during that time.

What would you like to reclaim now that this time has passed?

Kangmin: It's not that we lost anything in particular, but we did miss our fans during those two and a half years. We want to make up for that time and create more opportunities to spend time with them, communicate, and reconnect.

      —

As this is your first comeback following ‘Crazy Like That’, what were your thoughts and feelings leading up to this release?

Dongheon: We’re releasing this album after a long time. A lot has changed, and so have listeners' preferences, so we challenged ourselves to adapt to the new times. We aimed to present something a bit different from VERIVERY.

Yongseung: The hiatus prompted us to think carefully about the type of music we wanted to create. Once we found our direction, the break seemed less significant, and both recording and choreography went smoothly. Although there was much planning and discussion initially, the execution was really enjoyable.

      —

Since debuting, a significant aspect of your identity has been your involvement in creating your music, including songwriting and composition. For the members who contributed to this album – Dongheon, Yeonho, and Gyehyeon – what was the creative process like for you?

Gyehyeon: With this album, we really wanted to share our stories, so we decided to be involved in various aspects, from the songs to the storytelling.

      What inspires your songwriting?

Dongheon: When asked about my inspiration for songwriting, my heartfelt answer is always our fans. Especially for this album, as it comes after a long break, it's dedicated to the supporters who've been waiting for our return, as well as those who are just now discovering VERIVERY.

Though VERIVERY’s songs feature a diverse range of styles, they maintain a distinct sound. How would you define VERIVERY’s musical identity?

Gyehyeon: I would say our identity is shaped by our members’ voices and performances. This truly defines VERIVERY, as we take any genre or choreography and infuse it with our unique style.

For those who participated in Boys II Planet – Dongheon, Gyehyeon, and Kangmin – what did you take away from that experience, and how did you grow from it?

Kangmin: We met some incredible people on the show, who are very talented. Competing with them motivated me to learn from their strengths and skills. It prompted me to reflect on my own shortcomings.

      —

For members who didn't take part in Boys II Planet – Yeonho and Yongseung – how did you grow through the experience while the others were on the show?

Yeonho: It was truly inspiring to see them give their all. Knowing each other for seven or eight years, it was emotional to witness their hard work and struggles. Their dedication motivated me to think about how we will continue as VERIVERY after the program.

With VERIVERY's seventh anniversary approaching in January, how would you compare your team dynamic now to when you first debuted?

Dongheon: In our early days, as the oldest member, I often led discussions and created the group atmosphere. The others tended to listen more. Now, we’ve become more like brothers; we’re comfortable expressing ourselves and better understand how to support one another.

How have each of you evolved as artists since your debut?

Yongseung: For me, it’s been about my mindset. I started this journey out of love for dancing and singing. After debuting, I learned to communicate well with fans and enjoy that process. I also realized that this career comprises more than just performing; I’ve learned to think and act more professionally, which I
