Novelist – Boldness

A completely self-created body of work where Novelist combines six sharply defined vocal tracks with two beats reflecting different phases of his life, crafting a sound that embodies the grit, nostalgia, and progress of South East London in balanced proportions.

I’ve always believed that Novelist was destined for greatness. “10 racks on a vid + VAT, shit you never did.” From the very beginning of GRIND, he makes it clear: “Any grind I’m involved in I put my all in.” This is a principle he has consistently lived by and it underpins this entire project.

That JDZ Media freestyle from eleven years ago didn’t merely introduce him; it affirmed that he wasn’t entering the grime scene to imitate anyone. He arrived with his own unique vision. A decade later, he’s mastered every aspect of that vision: rapping, producing, mixing, and crafting complete sonic landscapes entirely on his own, while displaying his talent worldwide.

‘AUDACITY’ was released subtly in September — or perhaps my algorithm just failed me — but upon watching the Balamii set, the project became crystal clear. This is a South East London artist fully immersed in his craft, creating something genuine and unfiltered.

For a time, Nov took a step back from the noise of the industry — not absent, just honing his skills. Now he returns more focused, calmer, and intentional. At this point, he is mentioned alongside icons like D Double E — not due to similarity in sound, but because they both possess significant cultural influence. Artists whose effects extend well beyond a single release.

What makes ‘AUDACITY’ exceptional is its authenticity. There’s no attempt to smooth the edges for playlists, no chasing trends, and no compromising his essence. Just raw, purposeful grime, shaped by his personal experiences and instincts.

‘S.O.S.’ is the undeniable standout track — that energetic vibe only Nov is capable of delivering. The incorporation of instrumentals from two distinct periods — the 2014 classic ‘Long Jon Riddim’ and 2022’s ‘Feel the Heat’ — weaves a narrative of growth. You can hear the child who broke through and the man who has honed his craft.

Then there’s the Balamii Booth set — a glimpse into the album’s core. Nov brings along a full entourage: Kibo, Shaun Sky, Reekz, Prem, Lesia, Vision Crew, Renz, and MIC, ensuring there’s absolutely no silence. A true South x NW collaboration. The session reveals a new side of Nov: authoritative, playful, experienced, and communal. The energy is pure, unfiltered London.

The album exudes a dark essence and a tough mantra, yet beneath it all lies a positive, grounded message — a recurring theme in Nov’s music. Over the years, he has served as a reminder to maximize your circumstances, steer clear of pitfalls, and remain focused.

‘AUDACITY’ evokes comparisons to ‘Boy In Da Corner’ — not in its sound, but in its influence. That same electric vibe. That same sense of documenting the environment in real-time.

‘WAH’ remains a highlight, featuring the absolutely wild line:

“My arm is strong, I’ll embalm this don — just another guy that thinks he can’t be wrong.”

      Poetic chaos. Beautiful.

This is an album I know I’ll still be revisiting in 2027 — something designed to transcend the moment and be enjoyed repeatedly.
