The NONE: "Catering to anyone is simply futile."

"The older you become, it’s akin to saying, ‘I don’t mind, I’m just going to do what suits me.'” — Gordon Moakes

The live performance is at the core of The NONE; it is unequivocally their favorite aspect, as they are often attracted to the beloved, intimate independent venues scattered across the country. “We’ve all come up through these places,” Jim notes, mentioning venues like Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach and the Prince Albert in Brighton. “These are the spots where we spend our time, so it’s where we feel at ease and at home.” While their fondness for these spaces has historical roots, there’s also the irresistible allure of the atmosphere in small, crowded venues with sticky floors that can't be found elsewhere. For vocalist Kai, their ideal show is “when you can’t move, you can’t breathe, and you’re completely soaked. It sounds terrible, but it’s a good thing!” Gordon adds, “I’m all for hygienic small shows though. I’m not a germaphobe; I’m just suggesting they run a mop around, that’s all.”

Regarding their music—specifically, their forthcoming EP, ‘CARE’—The NONE excel at creating tension. Jim describes it as “sweet and sour, a clash of the melodic and the truly amelodic,” merging dissonant, abrasive instrumentation with Kai’s intriguing, harmonious vocal choices that both confront and complement each other effectively. While Kai recalls their goal being “for all of us to be as silly as possible while crafting quality music,” Gordon remembers thinking, “I’m going to create the ugliest music I’ve ever made.” This willingness to embrace “ugly” sounds and to entertain unconventional ideas soon influenced their recording and writing processes as well.

The band typically records together live in a space where everything is turned up at once, all in the spirit of keeping the experience enjoyable and engaging. However, while writing, Kai compares their approach to ‘yes and.’ “Jim will be strumming the most grotesque chords imaginable, with a chaotic time signature; it’s a complete racket,” they express enthusiastically, “and I’m like, yes! It just needs to be the right kind of filthy.” The NONE creates music instinctively. They are aware of their identity, their preferences, and their style of play; and they are enthusiastic about pursuing it in whatever way they choose.
