With a fable-like truth at its center...
Scottish-born songwriter Iona Zajac is back with her new track ‘Summer’.
CLASH encountered the artist in London last year during a special celebration of the influential 60s folk club Les Cousins, where she performed alongside the Broadside Hacks collective. Sharing some unique new ideas, Iona Zajac has now built on that momentum.
Released now, ‘Summer’ is a dark folk hymn, featuring a web-like guitar melody and her thoughtfully piercing vocals.
The poetic lyrics, enveloped in a profound atmosphere, hint at grander aspirations for this gifted artist. Iona remarks...
“As Jack’s mother expresses in the fable Death in the Nut: ‘without death there can be no life.’ Summer begins with a dream, as many of my songs do, followed by a morning epiphany that we require more than love to truly support someone. It reflects my inclination to suppress sadness to carry on. It addresses the essential fragility of life and the need to confront difficult emotions to pave the way for positivity. Emily Dickinson’s poem resonated with me like the drum that echoes at her own imagined funeral march. I dedicate a verse to her.”
“It is a song for those envisioning brighter days, for the end of wars, for the return of loved ones, for minds to clear from the fog. And when Summer finally arrives, we may discover enough resilience from the struggles to make it endure.”
