Across the globe, many individuals are yearning for solidarity. There is immense strength in reaching out, forming connections with others, and embodying the brightness needed in these times.

Although it's only February, jasmine.4.t has quickly gained attention this year. Closely linked to iconic artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, the boygenius trio has contributed to jasmine’s debut album, You Are the Morning (released through Saddest Factory Records in mid-January). It’s an extraordinary way to embark on a musical career.

jasmine.4.t has undoubtedly initiated her musical journey on a high note. However, her connection to these renowned artists is merely a minor detail compared to the impact of her music. I was profoundly moved by the themes and messages conveyed in this record. “The light still breaks through each morning” encapsulates the essence of You Are the Morning—a blend of personal chaos and a loving homage to queer friendships.

The album sparkles with its gentle yet commanding production, rich instrumentals, and captivating lyrics. Whether it’s the expansive string arrangements in “High Field,” the ethereal vocals featured in the title track, or the dynamic guitar riffs, jasmine has crafted an experience that is expansive while retaining its intimacy and vulnerability. This is its true strength.

jasmine's commitment to activism is evident, whether it’s highlighting queer community voices, such as the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles in the closing track “Woman,” or receiving support from an all-trans band on tour. She explains, “Giving a trans woman a microphone shouldn’t be overlooked. I intend to utilize that platform to address the challenges we face.”

In her conversation with Atwood Magazine, jasmine spoke candidly about the pain inflicted by societal issues but also embraced the countless joys present in our world. She succinctly noted, “Honest existence is resistance,” emphasizing how this record provides a vocabulary to discuss topics that are both beautiful and painful.

      **A CONVERSATION WITH JASMINE.4.T**

*TW: this interview addresses themes related to mental health struggles, trauma, self-harm, and housing insecurity.*

Atwood Magazine: Congratulations on your incredible album! I adore it, and I have numerous questions. How has the release been for you thus far?

jasmine.4.t: Honestly, it’s been beautiful and overwhelming. I’ve received so many amazing responses—not only from magazines and radio stations but also from trans women and other marginalized individuals worldwide. I got numerous unexpected DMs, particularly from older trans women saying, “I wish I had someone like you to look up to when I was transitioning.” That truly meant a lot to me. I’m grateful for the way this album has been embraced, especially during the chaos of January.

It's wonderful to receive that feedback from your community.

jasmine.4.t: Absolutely. With Trump signing these laws, I was scrolling through the news yesterday about what’s happening to trans women in prisons, and it’s horrifying. I feel anxious about traveling to America for South by Southwest. My whole band shares that fear. In North Carolina, we won’t even be able to use public restrooms when changing venues; we’ll have to hold it in.

I typically avoid using the word, but it’s all quite backward—the situation is heartbreaking.

jasmine.4.t: It is indeed backward—it feels like a regression from all the social progress that has been made. Here in the UK, we’ve just seen Wes Streeting, who oversees healthcare, planning to prohibit trans children from using puberty blockers. Following that, other countries, including Australia, have started to adopt similar measures. It's deeply disheartening. Many Australian trans followers of mine or their family members are directly impacted by this.

Yet, at the same time, many have reached out to express how this music helps them feel recognized and understood.

The timing of this record is impeccable.

jasmine.4.t: In a way, we were very conscious of that while recording. Even since then, things have deteriorated further, but 2023 was already a challenging year for trans individuals. There were moments in the studio when we’d pause and acknowledge that we were part of a historical moment. It was about filling that iconic space with trans individuals.

We recognized the importance of what we were creating—almost like we were establishing our own industry,
