Few bands capture and appreciate texture like Deafheaven. On their sixth studio album, this San Francisco band layers intense sound into tracks that shine like sharp-edged jewels. Beautiful segments, such as the midpoint grooves of ‘Body Behavior’ and the clean vocals that open ‘Heathen,’ create a balance against the band's signature thrilling heaviness, as seen in the unyielding ‘Magnolia.’ Additionally, ‘Amethyst’ showcases a gradually evolving metallic brilliance, while the closer ‘The Marvelous Orange Tree’ beautifully merges elements of extreme music and shoegaze. ‘The Garden Route’ stands out as the strongest track, its deep emotional resonance offering powerful catharsis. As captivating and unique as heavy albums can be, its transcendent moments may truly elevate listeners.
