A significant group in American experimental music...
Chicago avant-garde ensemble Tortoise has released a new track titled ‘Oganesson’.
The band plays a crucial role in Chicago’s influential experimental scene, merging a love for sonic exploration with innovative ideas. Their 1996 album ‘Millions Now Living Will Never Die’ continues to inspire, but it has been nearly ten years since their previous release, 2016’s ‘The Catastrophist’.
The new track ‘Oganesson’ changes this. Its smooth, jazz-inflected rhythm is anchored by an elastic bassline, while the staccato chords provide a backdrop for the intriguing, continuously unexpected melodic elements.
You can detect influences from Can, along with American fusion styles; it’s yet another branch extending from the substantial tree that is Tortoise.
Available now, ‘Oganesson’ precedes a live performance at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is released in anticipation of a forthcoming larger body of work through International Anthem & Nonesuch Records.
