Tony Njoku Reflects on His Past in Impactful Track 'ETERNITY'

"I view humanity, much like the universe, as a continuous phenomenon that has neither a definitive beginning nor an end."

On April 2, 2025, British-Nigerian composer and artist Tony Njoku presents a visual introduction to a new chapter with ‘ETERNITY.’

This string-infused instrumental work is accompanied by a captivating video that Njoku conceptualized and co-directed. It marks the conclusion of the ‘Bloom’ era—a comprehensive collection of four EPs that delve into themes of love, grief, and joy, alongside family, heritage, and conflict. The ‘Bloom’ pieces showcased the range of his artistry, fluctuating between piano melodies, ambient music, and string quartet arrangements.

With ‘ETERNITY,’ Njoku is now leveraging skills developed during this time to explore exciting new creative dimensions. The piece examines liminal existence and the continuum of time, described as “a sonic poem reflecting the eternal and countless cycles of the universe.”

“It embodies this sense of timelessness, the gradual rise and fall of phenomena, the ebb and flow where all our histories, experiences, and memories coexist—the joyful and painful, the ordinary and remarkable. Every significant event, every transient moment, contributes to this vast, ever-moving ocean of energy. Within it lies harmony and discord, unity and fragmentation, creation and destruction—a continual cycle that defines existence itself.”

Driven by collaboration, particularly with artists of color, the video for ‘ETERNITY’ emerged from a reconciliation of heritage and history, focusing on Britain’s colonial endeavors spanning over 400 years. The video contrasts images of colonial Britain with West African artifacts and features a symbolic ritual involving scarification.

Regarding the video, Njoku states: “The latter images hold profound significance for me as a Black individual with both British and Nigerian heritage. In many respects, this video is a journey through my identity viewed through the lens of history. My existence stems from a tumultuous mingling of worlds—a clash of cultures shaped by conquest and resistance. This historical backdrop is unavoidable; it is interwoven into the essence of who I am. Through this project, I seek to comprehend that legacy and perhaps discern my role within this fleeting moment in the broader narrative of human history.”
