Pulp has revealed plans for a new album titled 'More.'
This upcoming album marks their first release in nearly 24 years, following their experimentation with new material during their tour. Encouraged by the feedback, the Sheffield band retreated to Orbb Studio in Walthamstow E17, collaborating with producer James Ford.
In a seemingly swift process, Pulp has finished their new album – named 'More' – which will be released on June 6th via Rough Trade Records.
Their exciting new single 'Spike Island' is available online now. Below is a message from frontman Jarvis Cocker…
“I was informed that someone was looking into A.I. and if I had any ideas.
My initial thought was to animate the photographs taken by Rankin and Donald for Different Class: back in 1995, they provided an “artificial” way to place us in real-life situations and create an album cover while we were too busy recording to pose for photos. It seemed like a no-brainer.
I initially intended to create a "making of" video to show how the photos came about, but as soon as I uploaded the first image to the A.I. app, I realized that plan wouldn’t work. So, I decided to “go with the flow” and see what direction the computer would take me.
All the animated visuals in the video are the result of me inputting a still image and then typing a prompt like: “The black and white figure remains still while the bus in the background drives off,” which led to the sequence where the coach bizarrely slides towards my cut-out.
The weekend I began creating the video was quite strange: I stepped outside and kept expecting unusual changes in my surroundings due to the images generated by the computer. The experience left a mark on me. I’m not sure if I’ve fully recovered yet…
I’m grateful to Julian House for his excellent post-production work and to Rankin and Donald Milne for allowing me to use their work in this manner. As noted in the text at the end of the video, what they did for Pulp back in 1995 was “Human Intelligence at its best.”
My final thought? H.I. Forever!
x Jarvis
Here are a few more words from Jarvis about the album...
This is Pulp's first album since 'We Love Life' in 2001, marking a 24-year gap.
How did this come to be?
Well, when we resumed touring in 2023, we practiced a new song called 'Hymn of the North' during soundchecks and eventually performed it at the end of our second night at Sheffield Arena. This seemed to unleash creativity: we created the rest of the songs for this album in the first half of 2024. Some of these are revivals of ideas from the last century. One song’s music was written by Richard Hawley, another by Jason Buckle. The Eno family contributes backing vocals on one track. Richard Jones wrote the string arrangements, which were performed by the Elysian Collective.
The album was recorded over three weeks by James Ford in Walthamstow, London, beginning on November 18th, 2024. This is the shortest time it has ever taken to record a Pulp album. It felt like it was meant to happen.
These are the details.
We hope you enjoy the music. It was crafted by four individuals from the North of England, supported by five others from various places in the British Isles. No A.I. was involved in this process.
This album is dedicated to Steve Mackey.
This is our very best effort.
Thank you for listening.
