The Los Angeles-based band's first new release since their 2021 album 'Married', the five-track ‘Crave’ serves not only as a welcome reminder of the intensity of thrashing guitars and guttural vocal roars but also as a (re)introduction to Kills Birds. The opener ‘Behind’ shakes with post-hardcore intensity, its quiet/loud dynamics hitting all the right notes, while ‘Madison’ further explores this duality by reducing vocalist Nina Ljeti’s singing – which at times resonates with Karen O’s emotionally charged high notes and Brody Dalle’s deep growls – to a whisper, skillfully hinting at the song’s eventual explosion. ‘Trace’ shifts gears, featuring a catchy guitar riff, and while ‘Pyre’ is somewhat average, the closing track ‘Hollow’ truly shines: powerful, grunge-influenced guitars demand attention alongside a massive chorus, yielding exhilarating results.
