Check out not just one but two new singles, 'dream girl' and 'wake up b*tch'.
New York artist Yaya Bey is set to release her upcoming album, 'do it afraid', on June 20th through drink sum wtr.
Yaya first hinted at her new project last month with the Soca-influenced single, ‘merlot & grigio’ – her initial solo offering since the previous year's album, ‘Ten Fold’. As a consistently productive artist, Yaya presents two new tracks that highlight the contrasting aspects of her new work, which revels in moments of raw introspection alongside feelings of peace, joy, and celebration.
The light-hearted digi-funk number ‘dream girl’ revolves around “escaping to the party for a little while” and “truly embracing your desires, while acknowledging the many serious matters that demand your focus, yet still allowing space for fantasy.”
In contrast, the serene rhythm of the album's opening track ‘wake up b*tch’ reveals Yaya’s vulnerabilities and fears – echoing the introspective and contemplative mood found in her 2022 release, ‘Remember Your North Star’.
Regarding the album, co-created with BADBADNOTGOOD, Exaktly, and Virginia’s musical collective Butcher Brown, featuring additional contributions from Rahrah Gabor and Nigel Hall, Yaya Bey expresses:
“I crafted this album from my most vulnerable self, which, contrary to what many might assume about me, is not rooted in trauma but rather in my desire for love, joy… and freedom. In life, pain and loss are guaranteed; it takes true courage to dance in the face of what’s unavoidable. To appreciate the present and make it beautiful. I come from a lineage of people who excel at this. Observers often sensationalize our lives and strip away our complexities. Yet the reality is that we are brave, resilient, and joyful. I created this album for us. May we continue to do it afraid.”
To celebrate her new album, Yaya will perform at London's Omeara on May 21st. Secure your tickets here.
