After the first chorus of ‘Bovine Excision,’ the opening track of Samia’s third album ‘Bloodless,’ a delayed shuffle begins. A simultaneous hit of guitar and drums emphasizes the drum’s earlier absence, and similar to the first verse of the opener, ‘Bloodless’ finds solace in what’s lacking, whether it’s alluding to cattle mutilation or Sid Vicious’ framed fist print in ‘Hole in a Frame’. Clearly, Samia has never hesitated to explore intricate themes or employ somber metaphors: her 2023 breakout and award-winning album ‘Honey’ tackled topics of nihilism and murder. Her sharp, vivid songwriting is essential to her artistry, and with ‘Bloodless,’ her remarkable strength lies in her exploration of the unknown, as well as her ability to confront the raw, uncomfortable, and profoundly human aspects of herself. In ‘Lizard,’ she likens men and God, pointing out how both are supported by uncritical acceptance, stating “peace is a double-locked door, I’m the whore with the extra key.” Then, with the swift change of love into indifference, ‘Sacred’ poignantly captures the emotional turbulence of a breakup (“you never loved me like you hate me now”). Regarding production, the album generally adopts a straightforward style, often featuring just vocals and acoustic guitar, aligning with the overall message; if you reveal less of yourself, you’ll seem more substantial. As a result, Samia’s words have never resonated more deeply.
