d4vd: “I aimed for this project to truly reflect who I am, without any doubt.”

"I’m gradually revealing who d4vd is." As a true self-starter, he took his mother's advice, leading to the birth of d4vd. With a highly positive response that eventually resulted in his songs ‘Romantic Homicide’ and ‘Here With Me’ going viral in 2022, he quickly gained a fanbase within the Fortnite community. He explains that he always envisioned his music transcending mere montages. “The music [he created] for Fortnite happened to be great songs too. I crafted the songs for videos in the gaming community, and they fit that context. However, while creating those songs, I never thought, ‘I’m a gamer, so I’ll make this specifically for that. I’ll be overly corny, targeted at a specific audience, and limit myself to that persona.’ I had a clear understanding of my preferences, dislikes, inspirations, and passions. Music was subtly and gradually integrating into my life.” Being homeschooled influenced his music, which often reflected situations he hadn’t yet encountered. “When I began making these songs, I discovered that I was discussing very complex themes surrounding love and relationships, feelings and emotions that I hadn’t yet experienced. I was able to serve as a voice for the people around me, conversing with friends about their relationships, their issues, and how their breakups impacted them.” Eventually, he was able to channel his own experiences and deep emotions into his music, leading him to his 2023 EPs ‘Petals to Thorns’ and ‘The Lost Petals’. Both explore infatuation and the delicacy of love, while his upcoming debut LP ‘Withered’ represents the aftereffects—an introspective look at his development, embracing the beauty of life in its entirety, both the positives and negatives. This ranges from the captivating tension in ‘Crashing,’ featuring Kali Uchis, to the lively, observant tone of ‘What Are You Waiting For.’ The album reflects David’s embrace of his true self. “I wanted this project to be completely and unmistakably me: authentic to the d4vd sound, aesthetic, themes—everything had to represent me.” This journey required him to look deeper within himself. “I spent two weeks in London working on this project. When my friends and I arrived, I insisted we only listen to my music—not anything else, just d4vd. I was pondering, ‘How do I pursue my own sound and expand on it?’ So, I focused on my own melodies, lyrics, and themes. For the instrumentals and production, I drew inspiration from Radiohead, Nirvana, a bit of Billie Eilish, and Clairo. I aimed to remain within a consistent genre while still being unique, to enhance the album.”
