It’s shocking, yet perhaps fitting, that Ezra Furman’s latest studio album arrives at a time when legal actions in both the USA and the UK have made life even harder for trans individuals. However, this grim backdrop only enhances the importance of 'Goodbye Small Head' - an album marked by raw honesty and, in comparison to her previous works, unmatched vulnerability. Known for her ability to reinvent herself, this tenth album sees Ezra expand on her signature style—boisterous rock’n’roll and vivid folk narratives—by integrating electronic components. This combination creates a rich soundscape of intensity that is both desperate and defiant. The use of strings throughout much of the album harkens back to the expansive feel of 2018's 'Transangelic Exodus', and she also explores sampling for the first time; the track 'You Mustn’t Show Weakness,' with its erratic drums, mournful cello, and haunting vocals, stands out as a remarkable highlight of this new exploration. Lyrically, 'Goodbye Small Head' showcases some of her best writing, fearlessly exploring the darkest aspects of her psyche (as in the blood-soaked white flag imagery of 'Submission' or the forsaken resignation evident in 'Slow Burn'). She also channels her fierce, weary anger—“Human dignity was supposed to be a guarantee for all / Who gets left out of your dreams of a good society?” she questions in 'A World Of Love And Care.' Ultimately, the cover of 'I Need An Angel' featuring Alex Walton best captures this contrast: it’s a heartfelt, yearning plea for connection, layered with the sound of Ezra's ragged, breathy exhales—whether they be sobs, laughter, or a mix of both.
