Gemma Rogers Critiques Contemporary Dating in ‘Molly_1989’

Gemma Rogers is back. And she's not holding back her frustration. With ‘Molly_1989’, her first release of 2025, the cult London singer-songwriter returns to her punk-pop origins with a punchy track that critiques the relentless difficulties of modern dating.

Part character exploration and part emotional expression, ‘Molly_1989’ feels like a journal entry from a woman who has reached her breaking point.

Running under three minutes, it's as catchy as it is sharp. Don’t be deceived by the sweet tone of her voice. “I know many amazing women navigating the modern dating scene,” Gemma shares with CLASH. “And it’s infuriating. A toxic mix of vanity and emotional detachment.”

‘Molly_1989’ captures that anger in verses laden with rhetorical jabs, complemented by a chorus that shines even as it delivers biting commentary.

“I aimed to highlight the imbalance,” she explains. “The way women have to decipher charm and superficial confidence from men who have little to lose and no obligation to show kindness.”

The result is an electrifying, character-driven take on a world that prizes indifference over authenticity. It serves as an anthem advocating for self-respect over superficial allure.

Making its debut today on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6Music show, ‘Molly_1989’ signals a strong intention ahead of Rogers' upcoming sophomore album, set for release in 2026. With a busy summer planned, she is taking her message on tour with a series of performances (not the dating kind).
