A gentle and emotionally resonant reflection, “Start Again” sees The Bones of J.R. Jones grappling with pain, resilience, and the subtle strength of renewal in an incredibly personal ballad from his upcoming album, ‘Radio Waves.’

Listen: “Start Again” – The Bones of J.R. Jones

There’s something profoundly moving and quietly devastating about the idea of starting anew. In The Bones of J.R. Jones’ latest single, renewal is not portrayed as a dramatic explosion or a grand transformation; instead, it is presented in a softer, more tender manner. It brings discomfort and longing, struggling for breath like a dim porch light nearing its end – yet it persists, shining nonetheless. “Start Again” serves as a deep exploration of human vulnerability, endurance, and the possibilities that lie ahead. It is a stunning expression of openness and elegance, a powerful piece that deals with the burdens we bear and the quiet strength required to begin afresh. This song is not merely about new beginnings; it emerges as a therapeutic reminder that we are permitted to mourn what has passed while continuing to progress. It highlights our capacity to hold both love and loss, hope and regret, in our fragile hands.

Start Again – The Bones of J.R. Jones

      All my lines

      Run through you

      Your heart of gold

      Your heart of gold

      The broken chair

      Broken tongue

      Unsteady hands

      Our intentions hung

      Fold us down

      Into this land

      Close our eyes

      Start again

Atwood Magazine is thrilled to present “Start Again,” the third single from The Bones of J.R. Jones’ forthcoming album Radio Waves (set to release on June 20 via Tone Tree Music). Following the tracks “Car Crash” and “Shameless,” “Start Again” strips away the excess, focusing solely on Jonathon Linaberry and a piano, as they seek light amidst the darkness. What starts as an intimate, haunting ballad gradually expands into a sweeping, emotionally rich reverie that encapsulates the depth of the human spirit. Lasting just over three minutes, the song manages to encapsulate a lifetime filled with longing and forgiveness, pain and promise, memory and hope.

“All my lines run through you,” Linaberry sings in the opening verse, his voice imbued with significance. “Your heart of gold… the broken chair, broken tongue, unsteady hands… our intentions hung.” The lyrics possess a poetic simplicity that reflects the patterns we encounter in life and love – the unvoiced pains, the familiar conflicts, the quiet reconciliations. “Fold us down into this land / Close our eyes / Start again,” he repeats in the chorus, almost conjuring renewal into being.

“There’s a repetition and restraint to our lives and relationships that I think we all subscribe to in order to survive,” Linaberry confides to Atwood Magazine. “We fall into comforting and habitual patterns, whether they are healthy or unhealthy. The common arguments. The typical pushbacks. The shared efforts to understand one another: That’s what I aimed to convey in ‘Start Again.’”

      These late nights

      The radio hums

      Don’t turn the dial

      Let the night play on

      Back porch light

      Flickers at the moon

      I’m at the kitchen table

      Licking my wounds

The yearning for understanding and healing permeates the whole performance. The song develops gradually, incorporating layers of gentle harmonies, ambient sounds, and a subdued backbeat that carries the weight of all that remains unspoken. Linaberry’s delivery is profoundly human – never overly dramatic but rich with the reality of pain and love lived.

If “Start Again” serves as the song’s heartbeat, the accompanying music video embodies its soul in motion. Captured by Mike D’Alton (Seba Safe) during a recent European tour, the video weaves together candid behind-the-scenes snippets, performance clips, and moments from life on the road, radiating warmth and vulnerability.

“The talented Mike D’Alton shot this footage during three weeks of touring in Europe,” Linaberry explains. “I was fortunate to spend nearly every day with Patrick Blaney, Conchur White, and Mike, successfully avoiding getting lost, falling ill, or getting arrested: Only one of us was punched (that’s a win). Any touring musician will affirm that it takes a special crew to keep things together on tour. I know there are likely thousands of touring videos out there, but when I view this one, I genuinely feel the love – the persistence, the fatigue, and the sheer joy and tumult of a successful show.”

It’s that authentic experience – both visible on screen and present in the song – that makes “Start Again” resonate deeply. Linaberry does not soften the reality of disintegration or the effort required to rebuild. He simply tells the truth – quietly, reverently, and with poetic strength.
