Step aside, ‘BRAT’, it's time for single girl summer, and Los Angeles’ renowned sister trio is here to welcome it! Yes, HAIM is back, bringing with them a perfectly executed DGAF attitude to inspire us all to lead a more carefree life. In celebration of their forthcoming fourth album, ‘I Quit’, we are excited to feature the Haim sisters on DIY’s cover for a second time to discuss their daring, unrestrained new chapter. Even the album's title serves as a motto for living; it was inspired by a line from their beloved childhood movie, the Tom Hanks film That Thing You Do! and celebrates quitting as an act of self-love. “That’s the message we wanted to convey,” Alana states: “Quitting isn’t necessarily negative; it represents a fresh start, and on this album, we truly took a chance on ourselves. We often reflected deeply and allowed everyone to see our thoughts,” she elaborates. This vulnerability has been a gradual journey for HAIM, yet it remains a daunting experience, considering the audience who will listen to their music. “It’s always intimidating,” Danielle remarks, “but honestly, it requires a lot of bravery, and on this album, we felt no fear. Our guiding principle is ‘I quit what does not serve me,’ and I believe that fear is what holds us back the most.” In the rest of our June 2025 edition, we explore the somber depths of Paris’ Catacombs with Queens of the Stone Age; uncover the transitional spaces in Jacob Alon’s recent debut; and discuss beginnings and endings with Finn Wolfhard as he launches his first solo project. Additionally, we catch up with punk icons Refused as they prepare to make a stylish exit; enjoy a lighter conversation with Garbage’s Shirley Manson; and lose ourselves in the enchanting realm of McKinley Dixon’s new LP. In this month’s Neu section—your go-to for new music—we meet the exciting Cork band Cliffords, share a coffee with soul-pop star Nectar Woode, and anticipate Glastonbury with the winners of this year’s Emerging Talent Competition, Westside Cowboy. We also have an abundance of significant album reviews for you to explore—including those from Little Simz, Turnstile, and Pulp—and we cover the latest live events from The Great Escape, Slam Dunk, Live at Leeds In The Park, and Wunderhorse.
