It’s an incredibly hot summer day at BST Hyde Park, and Caity Baser couldn't be more thrilled. Today marks the release of her latest single, ‘The Story Of Her,’ which delves into her complicated relationship with her mother, and soon she will be wrapping up the prestigious Rainbow Stage.
The atmosphere is vibrant, with purple everywhere. Olivia Rodrigo’s name adorns t-shirts, lyrics are written on arms, and her iconic butterfly logo is carefully pressed onto loose-fitting apparel. For Baser, this is the ideal crowd for her bold, chart-ready songs.
Reflecting on her pivotal moment, the singer feels she has reached this milestone at the perfect time. “Oh my god! I watched Olivia perform at the O2 last year, and she was phenomenal. I’ve been a fan of hers since ‘Driver’s License,’ and I think she’s amazing,” she shares. “Then, I received a message from my manager saying, ‘Hey, this opportunity just came up, do you want to do it?’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, yes, I absolutely want to, are you serious? It sounds like so much fun.’”
Regarding her new music, Baser is excited to demonstrate her talents at BST. “I feel like I’m always on a journey, like we all are. Before, I would always write songs about boys and my frustrations with them. But now that I’ve recently fallen in love, it feels dishonest to continue making songs about hating men,” she explains.
“I thought it was time to explore deeper topics that affect me, some of which are very personal, such as my family and experiences from my past. This is the first time I’ve felt prepared and comfortable enough to tackle these challenging subjects. It’s really exciting because it reveals a different side of me that no one knows yet, which is pretty cool.” ‘The Story Of Her’ is deeply meaningful, yet fortunately, the song – part memoir, part confessional – hasn’t created any problems within her personal circle. “Everyone’s heard it, and everyone’s okay with it!” she adds.
Drawing inspiration from her favorite classic artists – Julie London, Chet Baker, Frankie Valli, Nat King Cole, and Etta James – Baser blends her appreciation for the golden era with modern pop. “That’s what I grew up listening to. I only listen to old music and boy bands!” she exclaims. Learning from her idols, Baser has one goal in mind: to elevate her career.
As she prepares for her biggest night at BST, she’s eager to connect with a new audience. “I want to keep evolving; that’s always the objective,” she says with a smile. “To keep growing and never stop!”
