Florence Road – Retreat

Florence Road – Retreat

The debut mixtape from the Irish DIY band makes a smooth passage through the rock genre. A promising first effort.

Florence Road, affectionately called Flo Ro by their fans, first took the stage looking as if they had just returned from a séance, exuding a DIY feminist angst with vocals reminiscent of The Cranberries. This four-member group has already shared the stage with artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Beabadoobee, yet they have carved out their own identity apart from the mainstream pop scene through their synergy, charm, and an alt-girl punk aesthetic.

Since their formation, the band has generated excitement, with covers and song previews gaining considerable attention on social media even before the release of their debut single. Lead vocalist Lily, drummer Hannah, bassist Ailbha, and guitarist Emma exhibit an undeniable chemistry reminiscent of childhood friends. They began rehearsing in Lily's shed, which also served as the location for the live music video of their fan-favorite track ‘Heavy’. Their garage rock style reflects influences from Fleetwood Mac, Wolf Alice, and Phoebe Bridgers.

Their debut mixtape makes a bold statement. Titled ‘Fall Back’, it features three previously released singles along with two new tracks that encapsulate a refined version of their authentically satisfying sound. Opening with ‘Hand Me Downs,’ the mixtape layers reverb and craftsmanship, presenting an inviting vibe akin to a Cate Le Bon basement session, culminating in soaring wails during the chorus. With crashing drums and airy guitars, the track captivates listeners with its shimmering verses.

The band's surrealistic lyrics explore themes of intimacy, contemporary relationships, and the fleeting nature of time, finding strength and resonance in shared experiences. ‘Goodnight’ offers a whimsical, comforting listening experience: Lily’s evocative voice brings to mind Alanis Morissette, blending polished pop elements with a clappy, sing-along chorus, while the edgy ‘Figure It Out’ features wailing guitars and dynamic production – an anthem ready for festival crowds.

Formed in 2019, the band signed with Warner late last year and has collaborated with well-known producers, including John Hill, Dan Wilson, and Dan Nigro. While working with established names is a promising next step for Florence Road, there’s a concern that their raw essence may be softened in favor of a more uniform sound. Nevertheless, the freshness and whimsy of their debut mixtape suggest that their upcoming work will reflect their unique character.
