Stay Calm and Enjoy the Moment: Deftones Perform at Eden Project

The alt legends made a stop in Cornwall for an unforgettable night filled with classics and a few surprises.

Few vocalists deliver a live performance as remarkable as Chino Moreno. Nearly 28 years have passed since the Sacramento rock band released their second LP, 'Around the Fur.' As Deftones kicked off a tightly curated set spanning their entire career with a powerful rendition of the iconic anthem 'Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away),' it was no surprise to find that Moreno, Cunningham, Delgado, and the rest of the band sounded absolutely stunning. Yet, we are still left completely awestruck.

With Fred Sablan on bass, Shaun Lopez—Moreno's collaborator from Crosses—on rhythm guitar, and Lance Jackman filling in for lead guitarist Stephen Carpenter, Deftones delivered an exhilarating 90-minute set against a backdrop unlike any other in the country. Tucked away in a former clay quarry, Cornwall’s Eden Project offers a unique setting, with its magnificent biomes illuminating in harmony with the music. The vibrant live visuals were brought to life by VOWWS frontman Rizz.

Curating a set from nine albums is no easy task, and this performance featured tracks from eight of the band’s nine albums, with 'Around the Fur' and 'Diamond Eyes' carrying much of the load—highlighted by tracks like 'My Own Summer (Shove It)' and both titular songs. The opener 'Swerve City' from ‘Koi No Yokan’ emerged as a surprising standout, while the powerful performances of 'You’ve Seen The Butcher' and 'Rocket Skates' contrasted with quieter moments such as 'Digital Bath' and 'Sextape,' showcasing Moreno’s timeless vocal prowess.

“This is a beautiful place full of beautiful people,” Moreno humbly expressed halfway through, before diving into a second act that ramped up the energy with 'Headup,' 'Rosemary,' and the 'White Pony' favorite 'Change (In the House of Flies),' all supported by the enthusiastic crowd. The main segment concluded with a nod to their latest album, 2020’s 'Ohms,' featuring an emotional performance of 'Genesis,' which was one of the evening's highlights.

For the grand finale, the band ended with the crowd-pleasing 'Minerva' before delivering a thrilling double feature of 'Adrenaline' opener 'Bored' and '7 Words,' a treat saved for last to preserve Moreno’s voice for the repeated emphatic exclamation of “suck.” It's astonishing that this track was a staple in the 1990s, and even more so that it sounds just as incredible live thirty years later.

Few bands can engage an audience quite like Deftones, and the unique venue of Eden Project’s annual Eden Sessions adds an extra edge to the experience. Although the upcoming performances at Glastonbury and Sunday’s Crystal Palace headliner may differ, those attending can anticipate something special. Don’t miss out.
