A vibrant mix of genres, soundscapes, and emotions...
On the Zach Sang Show, Kevin Abstract characterizes ‘Blush’ as “It’s whatever it’s gonna be tomorrow.” The alternative polymath isn’t merely attempting to revive the legacy of BROCKHAMPTON. This album, project, or whatever term we choose to use, is a dynamic creation, showcasing the debut work of Kevin Abstract along with the current lineup of ‘Blush’.
In addition to Abstract and Dominic Fike, the ‘Blush’ team includes talents such as Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, Jim-E-Stack, Romil Hemnani, Daniel Aged, Love Spells, Quadeca, DERBY, and even Dr. Dre's daughter, Truly Young, among others. Leading up to its release, the Instagram account clifford__73 frequently invoked references to classic Dre albums like ‘2001’ and ‘The Chronic’. The influence is unmistakable: Kevin Abstract is crafting a sonic vision centered around artists rather than distinct genres, much like Dr. Dre during his career's peak.
Abstract has been a key figure in the post-genre scene throughout the 2010s. Whether through solo projects, his prominent role in his beloved boyband, or by showcasing emerging talent (like Dominic Fike), Kevin Abstract has consistently been a powerful force in a rapidly evolving musical landscape. ‘Blush’ serves as the latest evidence of this.
It is clear that ‘Blush’ marks a shift from Abstract’s previous work, the grungey, alt-rock ‘Blanket’ released in 2023. Yet, it maintains a live energy: ‘97 Jag’ features an aggressive drum break, lively guitars, and West Coast synths, giving it a carefree, open-air vibe. ‘Maroon’, written by Dominic Fike, reflects his distinct musical style, reminiscent of his last solo effort, ‘Sunburn’, encapsulating the dreamlike, sun-drenched environment he has created. However, ‘Blush’ also goes beyond its contributors' strengths.
‘Nola’ dives into a fast-paced, almost cyber-club territory with Quadeca’s frenetic beat. In ‘Danny’s Track’, Danny Brown delivers his verses over a more relaxed instrumental than usual. ‘I Wasn’t There’, led by Houston talent DERBY, leans into Alex G’s territory, which feels a bit out of place but not necessarily negatively.
While ‘Blanket’ operated in tightly focused, genre-specific segments, ‘Blush’ embraces more chaotic influences, which the diverse roster highlights. The most compelling aspects of ‘Blush’ lie in its artistry rather than strict adherence to precision. Abstract and collaborators have cast a wide net, creating a vibrant mix of genres, soundscapes, and emotions. ‘Blush’ further broadens Kevin Abstract’s genre-agnostic approach, with a strong sense of community and belonging threading through it beautifully.
