South London saxophonist and producer Venna has unveiled his third single, ‘Day x2’ featuring MIKE and Marco Bernardis, from his upcoming debut album ‘MALIK’, set to be released on September 5th.
The track ‘Day x2’ includes Venna’s vocals, a compelling verse from MIKE, and saxophone, synth, and guitar contributions from Marco Bernardis, with additional production by agajon, Venna, and Bernardis. This laid-back, jazz-influenced piece reflects on the natural synergy and strength of collaboration, delving into the theme of yielding to the ups and downs of life.
Regarding the single, Venna shares: “Day x2 is a song about going with the flow of each day and remaining open to learning experiences. Life can be tough at times, making it challenging to remain loving, but it's essential to learn and move forward with love in our hearts. I created this track with agajon (producer), Marco Bernardis, and MIKE, all of whom I deeply respect and have collaborated with before.”
In his debut full-length ‘MALIK’, Venna curates an experience meant to encourage listeners to let go, be present, and engage with sensory experiences. The 17-track album pays tribute to roots, heritage, and the journey of self-discovery.
Venna brings together a group of close collaborators, featuring guest vocals and verses from Jorja Smith, CARI, Leon Thomas, Smino, and the previously mentioned MIKE, as well as contributions from musicians like Rocco Palladino, Elijah Fox, AoD, J Warner, and longtime partner, Yussef Dayes.
“Every experience, every memory, every conversation, anything new, and every encounter has shaped the sound of this album. I might be inspired by a specific guitar tone, which I then incorporate into my work. Everything has come together beautifully in one cohesive project,” Venna explains.
“The album MALIK was named by my mother 26 years before its creation. It’s a powerful name meaning King or leader in Arabic, a name I've lived with throughout my life. It's what my loved ones call me and something I’ve learned to embody. Throughout the album’s journey, I had another name that I cherished, but I felt it was essential to acknowledge my true self, and what better way to do that than by naming my debut album after the name my mother gave me.”
Accompanying the single is a beautiful found-footage visual directed by Venna and Sam Adjaye. Check it out below.
