Ethiopian artist Mulatu Astatke has announced his plans for his first major studio album in a decade.

The musician played a key role in creating a distinctive sound during the “Swinging Addis” period, coining the term “Ethio Jazz” along the way. His influence has been felt globally, with numerous compilations introducing “Ethio Jazz” to varied audiences.

Now, he’s making a return. Mulatu Astatke has finished his first major studio album in ten years, titled ‘Mulatu Plays Mulatu’, which is set for release on September 26th through Strut.

“Throughout my life, I have aimed to share Ethio jazz with people around the world, and I believe I have achieved that,” Mulatu states.

The album, produced by Dexter Story and featuring contemporary LA-based musicians Carlos Niño and Kibrom Birhane, was recorded and mixed at RAK Studios in London by Isabel Gracefield and by Dexter Story in Addis Ababa.

The passionate new track ‘Netsanet’ (meaning ‘freedom’) explores Ethio-jazz roots, allowing Mulatu Astatke to venture into new territories.

This track was recorded in both London and Addis Ababa, collaborating with his long-time UK band—musicians he has worked with for years at the Jazz Village club in Addis.

“Ethio-jazz unites us and makes us one,” he explains. “This album represents the culmination of my efforts to share this music with the world and pays tribute to the unsung heroes, the original musical innovators in Ethiopia who provided us with our cultural music.”

‘Zelesenga Dewel’ ‘Kulun’ ‘Netsanet’ ‘Yekermo Sew’ ‘Azmari’ ‘Chik Chikka’ ‘The Way To Nice’ ‘Motherland Intro’ ‘Motherland’ ‘Mulatu’ ‘Yekatit’
