The Best Of Times: A Preview of Way Out West 2025

The music festival scene is quite crowded these days, with diverse events occurring globally to cater to all preferences. In such a competitive environment, what distinguishes Sweden’s Way Out West?

      Impressive line-up in Gothenburg

It's not an exaggeration to claim that this year’s main WOW (the acronym is fitting) music program is among the most thrilling in 2025. Headlining the event are major pop stars like Charli XCX and Chappell Roan, alongside iconic figures such as the legendary Iggy Pop, Pet Shop Boys, and Queens of the Stone Age.

However, moving further down the lineup does not mean a drop in quality. For instance, two thrilling acts that delivered standout performances at Glastonbury will also be featured at WOW. Wet Leg has made a significant comeback, transforming into post-future superheroes, clearly moving on from their Chaise Longue beginnings. They are joined by CMAT, known for her bold and joyous performances that promise to deliver an empowering experience.

There are many more artists for every taste, ranging from the genuine urban vibes of Little Simz to the innovative blends of Khruangbin; from the iconic Beth Gibbons to the guaranteed crowd-pleasers Confidence Man; from the exquisite Nilüfer Yanya to the controversial Kneecap, along with notable global trendsetters such as Amaarae, ODUMODUBLVCK, and Greentea Peng. The list continues to expand.

      No need for sleep

After the main stages wrap up around 11 pm, there’s no need to call it a night. WOW’s after-hours program, Stay Out West, is included in the ticket price. This standalone festival features a series of late-night performances in cinemas, clubs, dive bars, and industrial spaces. It offers an opportunity to dive into Gothenburg’s local scene and experience some of the most exciting bands in cozy venues. Expect acts like Girl Scout, Ekkstacy, The Dare, GIRLBAND!, and Waterbaby...

There's plenty to explore beyond the primary music acts: artist talks, DJ performances, films, and visual installations... plus, the city of Gothenburg itself.

      More environmentally friendly than others

Though WOW is a city-center festival, it remains eco-conscious: the daytime events occur in the expansive 340-acre Slottsskogen Park, allowing you to stroll among the trees or take a boat ride on the lake to spot ducks between performances. The festival has designated smoking and drinking zones, and past attendees have consistently reported an almost litter-free environment and even pleasant restroom facilities. Additionally, all food offerings are 100% vegetarian across the festival grounds—this commitment has been in place since 2012, long before it became a trend.

      Efficiency and leisure

Most festival-goers do not attend to relax; however, no one enjoys expending energy rushing between stages or struggling to find food or seating. WOW is recognized as one of the most accessible and stress-free festival experiences in Europe. The schedule is thoughtfully designed to minimize frustrating overlaps, and the park setting ensures that stages are within a short walking distance.

Furthermore, Gothenburg itself is compact, rich in culture, and friendly for pedestrians and cyclists. It also boasts reasonably priced dining and accommodation choices. All these factors contribute to making WOW feel like a true escape as well as an opportunity for musical enjoyment.
