African music has experienced significant growth in recent years. According to the IFPI, global recorded music earnings rose by 10.2% in 2023. In 2024, the IFPI’s Global Music Report revealed that sub-Saharan Africa secured a top spot as the only region achieving over 20% growth, with revenues increasing by 24.7%, marking it as the region with the highest growth for the second consecutive year.

As Nigerian artist Burna Boy, whose full name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, releases ‘No Sign Of Weakness’, the eighth album in his career, he navigates a diverse array of genres; within his musical labyrinth lies a rich sound palette, blending afrobeat, rock, country, and R&B. This latest project is a true homage to the continent’s remarkable progress, as well as a testament to Burna Boy’s own impressive achievements.

For instance, the artist has garnered over 22 million monthly listeners on Spotify, made history as the first Nigerian album to reach the top of the Official UK Albums Chart, and became the first Nigerian musician to win a Grammy in 2021. There is no doubt regarding the wide-ranging appeal and depth of Burna Boy’s music, which continues to serve as an exploratory expression of the potential of afrobeat.

His latest endeavor? A genre-spanning tapestry, featuring a remarkable lineup of guest artists, including the moody and sultry ‘Ta Ta Ta’ featuring the somewhat controversial Travis Scott, and the catchy country tune ‘Change Your Mind’ with Shaboozey. Not to forget, rock legend Mick Jagger surprises listeners in the mid-album track, ‘Empty Chairs’. Jagger’s distinct British accent weaves through a mix of syncopated afrobeat influences, and without prior knowledge of the album’s setlist, it could leave audiences in awe, though the caliber of collaborators exceeds all expectations. This unexpected alliance with the 81-year-old rock icon was facilitated by supermodel Naomi Campbell, with their discussions occurring over WhatsApp. “That’s where I want to be when I’m that age,” Burna Boy remarked when asked about the album’s origins. "I made sure that everyone involved in this project could genuinely proclaim that they’re a rock star.”

Belgian pop giant Stromae also graces the album, bringing ‘No Sign of Weakness’ its global flair. Staying true to his signature sultry style, ‘Pardon’ allows Burna Boy to take a backseat while showcasing the brilliance of his collaborator. The repetitive hooks in tracks like ‘Come Gimme’ and ‘Bundle by Bundle’ linger in the mind long after listening. The album delves into themes of love, loss, and substance use, with moody and seductive numbers like these maintaining a consistent sultry undertone, while tracks like ‘Change Your Mind’, ‘28 Grams’, and the closing piece ‘Born Winner’ exude vibrancy and joy.

A beautiful and gentle melody accompanies inspirational spoken word as the album reaches a powerful conclusion. Comforting affirmations open the track, affirming, ‘You are born to be great’. Emerging from a series of darker, emotionally charged songs, ‘Born Winner’ stands strong. Euphoric and stunning, Burna Boy’s eighth release culminates in a soothing finale, featuring a choir that inspires hope, with spoken word enriching the piece. Reflective and uplifting, at a moment that feels pivotal for Burna Boy, the closing lyrics effectively convey his objectives: celebrating resilience through the challenges life has presented: “Your guiding light shines ahead of you. Follow it, you are born to win…”
