Los Campesinos! have announced their decision to decline a lucrative Airbnb sync due to their commitment to Palestinian solidarity.
The online rental service has drawn criticism for permitting properties on disputed land in the Middle East to be listed as vacation rentals.
The BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) movement has put Airbnb in its sights, considering these contested listings a breach of Palestinian rights.
In a brief social media message, Los Campesinos! stated that they were approached by Airbnb to feature their song in a potentially profitable advertisement but chose to reject the offer outright.
The band wrote:
In April, we turned down an offer of $60,000 to license one of our songs for an Airbnb commercial.
Airbnb continues to profit from appropriated Palestinian land and worsens the global housing crisis. We refuse to endorse or benefit from this.
Free Palestine. Eat the Rich.
Furthermore, Los Campesinos! added:
We are sharing this because we find similar acts of solidarity and protest from our peers to be motivating.
Every time an artist takes a principled stand, it helps the next artist to follow suit.
This is a significant act – Los Campesinos! are an independent band operating with minimal financial backing. To illustrate the group’s financial struggle, refer to their recent blog post about a loss-making trip to Ireland.
