Sudan Archives Reveals Upcoming Album ‘The BPM’

Sudan Archives is set to release her third album, ‘THE BPM’, on October 17th through Stones Throw.

The album's announcement was preceded by the electrifying dance track ‘DEAD’ and comes after her expansive coming-of-age project, ‘Natural Brown Prom Queen’, which was ranked No.2 on the CLASH Albums of the Year list for 2022.

On ‘THE BPM’, Sudan Archives, whose real name is Brittney Parks, took control of the recording process, serving as executive producer for the first time. Rather than working with various producers, she collaborated with those in her immediate circle: her sister, a cousin from Detroit, and a close friend.

Musically, the album draws from Sudan's mother's heritage in Michigan and her father's in Illinois, blending these influences with the groundbreaking club sounds that originated in Chicago and Detroit, where parts of the album were created. The songs incorporate elements of proto-techno, Jersey Club, and experimental beats, all tied together by Sudan’s exceptional string arrangements.

‘THE BPM’ introduces a new character: Gadget Girl, a technologically savvy musician celebrated for her integration of technology. This concept aligns with the album’s exploration of mental health, self-acceptance, technology, romance, and heartbreak, all while maintaining a vibrant, celebratory energy.

“I wasn't the girl in a band during high school – I could only express myself when I got my first iPad and began making beats, and then when I received my first electric violin. Now, I’m fully immersed in gadgets, and I've never felt more liberated as a person,” she shares.

Accompanying the album announcement are two new singles: ‘My Type’ and ‘Yea Yea Yea’. Sudan describes ‘My Type’ as her first true "rap rap song" – a dynamic track that delves into themes of sexual freedom and showcases some of her most innovative production.

“The song has a flirty, cheesy, and sexy vibe because I’m boosting my friends and also expressing ‘These are the types of girls I’m attracted to’,” she explains. “It also raises questions about sexuality – am I just friends with these women, or do I have deeper feelings for them?”

Sudan Archives has also revealed her largest headline shows to date in the UK and Europe, including a performance at London’s Roundhouse. Tickets can be purchased at sudanarchives.com/tour.
