KOKOROKO’s sophomore studio album, ‘Tuff Times Never Last’, serves as a heartfelt homage to a vibrant London summer, capturing the essence of a sensuous, jazz-infused urban landscape. While primarily uplifting, the album carries an undertone of sadness, suggesting that great artistry and love often emerge from struggle.
The lead single ‘Sweetie’ is delightful, reminiscent of a lively afternoon under the sun, while tracks like ‘My Father’ offer a more unrefined vocal quality than what we’ve previously encountered from KOKOROKO. Each song is uniquely danceable, with ‘Top Gun’ towards the end of the album being perhaps the most infectious.
This album marks a remarkable evolution in their sound, as KOKOROKO taps into their talent, collaborating with various artists to explore themes more profound than their past efforts.
8/10
