In the spring of 2023, I took my brother to see Valley on their Lost in Translation Tour. As a huge fan of Valley, I also had an ulterior motive: wanting to appear as a cool older sister who attends concerts for work. During the opener’s performance, I turned to my brother and said, “Wait, I recognize this song. I didn't realize it was by him,” gesturing loosely towards the performer on stage. My brother responded incredulously, “No way. That guy is too famous. It must be a cover.” I nodded, because that was my first exposure to Aidan Bissett. The song in question was indeed "More Than Friends," a track with almost 96 million streams, and at that moment, it was a crowd of 2,000 singing along. Just two years later, audiences of 5,000 join in.
Before the launch of his debut album, shut up and love me, Bissett had already amassed over 1.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. For those familiar with his music, his swift rise to success is hardly surprising. “For a long time, I didn’t feel ready to put out a full album, or didn’t have enough to say,” he explained to Atwood Magazine. Since “More Than Friends,” he has released several singles and two EPs. Bissett contemplated transforming his recent project, Supernova, into a full-length album, but “something just didn’t feel right.” He elaborated, “I wanted to ensure that when the moment arrived, it would feel like a complete project rather than just a collection of singles."
shut up and love me, which dropped on July 25 via 10k Projects / Capitol Records, examines the desire for connection across 13 tracks. The album predominantly features alt pop and indie rock while showcasing Bissett’s influences. “I’ve always been fond of band-style music. It feels incredibly liberating for some reason,” he shared. “There’s just something about bands; perhaps it’s because I grew up listening to them.” Although he is a solo artist, Bissett frequently recognizes touring drummer Fionn Roche and guitarist Grant McManus as “the greatest show on Earth” on social media.
Bissett describes band music as “tastefully shit,” which is meant as a compliment. His home was filled with the sounds of Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC during his upbringing, thanks to his father's passion for music, capturing his attention from an early age. His first CD was Coldplay’s Parachutes, which opened his eyes to the complexities of genre and sound beyond traditional rock. “There are many flaws here and there. Nothing’s perfect,” Bissett explains. “I think that’s what makes it feel human. I’ve always been attracted to that because I never wanted everything to be too polished.”
At its core, shut up and love me centers on the humanity within relationships. The lead single, “are we in love yet?”, was released in March 2025, five months before the album itself. It was the first track written for the project, preceding his 2024 EP “Supernova.” Initially unsure of what to do with the song, Bissett felt that he had created something unique. He revisited it when he began contemplating the album's direction. “A friend of mine often says that sometimes when you create things, you’re a step ahead of yourself or your taste. It’ll eventually catch up to you, and I certainly feel that was the case here.” The song became a natural centerpiece of the album, offering listeners a glimpse into a longer, narrative-driven Aidan Bissett experience.
I’m just so kissable,
But it all just feels so miserable,
When you call, talk so subliminal,
Like you do.
Red dress so criminal,
In my head, in bed so physical,
Every move you make so minimal,
If I’m honest,
The hardest thing to do
Is to pretend that I’m modest.
Would you want me to bite my tongue?
And I’m so terrified
We won’t get this right.
I wanna know,
Are we in love yet?
The album kicks off with “reading into it,” a playful exploration of the early stages of a new relationship. The instrumentals evoke the flirtation and excitement of beginnings, drawing listeners into Bissett’s narrative. The song features a hazy piano intro that sets the tone as the album opener. “It feels very
