Westside Cowboy launches their debut EP with a bold declaration in the track ‘I’ve Never Met Anyone I Thought I Could Really Love (Until I Met You)’. This Manchester-based band, who came together during their university days, fuses slacker rock with transatlantic influences, creating a distinctive sound that feels entirely their own. The chaotic ‘Alright Alright Alright’ displays the band’s versatility, both musically and lyrically, as it captures the essence of their equestrian namesake. In contrast, ‘Drunk Surfer’ features driving guitar riffs and echoes the style of Black Country, New Road, possibly due to its erratic melodies and the vocal harmonies of Reuben Haycocks and Aoife Anson O’Connell.
On the other hand, ‘Shells’ takes a softer approach, with gentle guitar strumming and ethereal vocals providing a soothing break from the more energetic earlier tracks—until it evolves into a folk-infused piece with an expansive guitar finale. The EP concludes with the slow-building ‘Slowly I’m Sure’, which presents a blend of melancholy and romance, as Aoife’s falsetto beautifully intertwines with Reuben’s voice in its closing moments—a subtle yet cinematic finish to this engaging debut.
