Ways Of Seeing make a compelling comeback with their new single ‘Cruel, Naturally’.
The band, guided by the creative vision of James O’Donnell, fuses sharp indie rock riffs with a powerful alt sound. Their lyrics range from literary references to personal truths, all tied together with a strong sense of determination.
Their upcoming album ‘The Inheritance Of Fear’ is set to be released on October 10th, following collaborations with producer Christian Best, and contributions from Daniel Fox of Gilla Band.
The new single ‘Cruel, Naturally’, taken from the album, showcases some of the band's defining characteristics—sharp lyricism, clever wordplay, and the inherent weight of their musicality.
Now available, this bold release examines the concept of inherited trauma while questioning the boundaries between the past and the present.
Vocalist James elaborates...
‘Cruel, Naturally’ reflects on the notion of inherited trauma—the emotional patterns and unresolved issues that are passed down from generation to generation, often unintentionally or without awareness. It draws inspiration in part from Philip Larkin’s This Be The Verse—the track explores the conflict between empathy and burden, love and legacy.
The song is structured in fragments: snapshots of childhood, disillusionment in adulthood, and the dawning realization that certain experiences persist. The line ‘No one ever makes it, to save themselves and save the born’ encapsulates the challenge of breaking cycles while bearing this weight. The song acknowledges the anger that may accompany such burdens and the quiet acceptance that often follows. Furthermore, it touches on the more subtle forms of inheritance—silence, emotional absence, or unvoiced expectations—that impact individuals just as significantly as overt trauma.
