On May 9, 2025, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and producer Venna has released his debut album, ‘MALIK.’
This extensive 17-track collection showcases Venna not only as a sound conductor but also a vocalist, marking his first time featuring his vocals prominently in the mix. Departing from the jazz productions of his early years, ‘MALIK’ offers a rich, adventurous experience influenced by bossa nova, R&B, soul, and rap, as well as the various places he visited while creating this work.
“Every experience, every memory, every conversation, anything novel, any encounter has shaped the sound of this album. I might be drawn to a specific guitar tone from it, and then I incorporate it into my universe. Everything has converged into one space, and it’s wonderful to hear and see,” Venna explains.
The album includes vocal contributions from Jorja Smith, Cari, Leon Thomas, Smino, MIKE, and features input from artists such as Rocco Palladino, Elijah Fox, AoD, J Warner, Marco Bernardis, and his long-time collaborator, Yussef Dayes.
Venna views the features on the album not as mere guests, but as collaborators and team members while he leads the project. The process of creating ‘MALIK’ placed him in the role of band leader, and the album's strength stems from the instinctive moments of interplay and collaboration.
