"One thing I always keep in mind is that social media focuses on people rather than algorithms. When I feel like I’m connecting with people rather than just interacting with a system, it becomes much more rewarding." In 2025, you’ve already toured with artists like FINNEAS and Orla Gartland, in addition to your own headlining performances. Have you been treating live audiences to any previews of your upcoming ‘Incurable Optimist’ EP? How do you feel about performing new tracks for the first time? I enjoy playing new songs. It can be a bit intimidating since audiences have their phones and might capture a version that differs from the released one, but that’s also a lovely aspect - you witness the evolution. It’s mostly comforting to know there are people eager to listen. This EP posed challenges but was also quite fascinating since I worked on some production while on the road, shaping the final versions based on how my performance was developing.
Even though you haven’t released a full album yet, you've gained admirers worldwide (including some well-known names!), thanks in part to social media and Reddit. Can you share your perspective on your relationship with the internet? For artists, it seems both advantageous and detrimental... Absolutely, it’s a double-edged sword. Patrick Watson once wisely pointed out the privilege of social media, as it allows artists to control their narrative. You can create your own world and invite others into it. Discipline, honesty, and boundaries are crucial. I haven't perfected it yet. But I always try to remember that social media is about connecting with people, not just engaging with algorithms. When I feel like I'm sharing with individuals rather than a faceless entity, it’s much more satisfying.
If you found yourself on a deserted island and could only take one album, one book, and one film/TV series with you, what would you choose (and why)? Wow. I’ll go with the first things that come to mind, knowing that whatever I pick, I'd probably long for what I didn’t choose for the rest of my life. But that’s just how it goes.
Album: The Beach Boys, ‘Pet Sounds’ (come on - those songs). Or possibly ‘Lily-O’ by Sam Amidon.
Book: Maya Angelou, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (or ideally all seven of her autobiographies).
Film: Forrest Gump, Big Fish, OR Breaking Away. Apologies; I know that’s three.
Lastly, if DIY is coming over for dinner, what will you be cooking? A variety of random salads and vegetables. If my dad is around, he’ll be eager to join in and BBQ some chicken wings. I don’t follow recipes, but I trust my instincts pretty well, unless I get sidetracked. You might find that one of the dishes turns out a bit burnt, but that’s tastier anyway… right?! Then we’d have some kind of chocolatey, quirky dessert, plus some fruit if I’m really making an effort. Finally, there would be dessert wine and plenty of inappropriate jokes. ‘Incurable Optimist’ releases on 3rd October through Giant Music.
