At first glance, it seemed problematic for Big Thief that they entered a studio in midtown Manhattan this past January without a clear vision for how their sixth album would emerge. For a band known for their intricate, creative arrangements throughout their musical journey, approaching a recording without fully developed ideas should have felt counterintuitive - but they needn’t have been concerned. ‘Double Infinity’ is a wonderfully satisfying album where everything seems perfectly placed; featuring up to twelve musicians on some tracks, it still maintains an intimate and relaxed vibe. Adrianne Lenker continues to excel in her songwriting; with each new release, whether with the band or solo, discussions about who the top songwriter of her generation might be are increasingly drawing to a conclusion. Compared to last year's more unfiltered solo project ‘Bright Future’, her lyrics here are more playful and conversational, which beautifully complements the sound of ‘Double Infinity’: there’s a country-influenced charm to the enchanting ‘All Night All Day’; a folky lightness in ‘Los Angeles’; and an uplifting, anthemic feel to the harmony-rich finale ‘How Could I Have Known’. There’s also space for experimentation; ‘Incomprehensible’ is imbued with a wonderfully odd, otherworldly ambiance, as Adrianne's stream-of-consciousness begins to transform into a compelling message of self-empowerment. She is a true talent, and now Big Thief boasts six excellent albums.
It seems that the most successful careers belong to artists who pursue their passions on their own terms. The gradual approach seems to be the most effective, focusing on producing each album to the best of your ability.
