After nearly 25 years as a band, one thing is clear: Biffy Clyro have consistently followed their instincts. From the raw, edgy excitement of their early releases to the grand, mainstream-appealing sounds of 2009’s ‘Only Revolutions’, they’ve navigated various styles and genres with ease, never seeming to doubt their choices. Following the somewhat prophetic ‘A Celebration of Endings’ and its direct successor ‘The Myth of The Happily Ever After’—both of which explored a more unique aspect of their musical identity—and Simon Neil’s venture into heavy metal with his side project Empire State Bastard, it’s not surprising that Biffy’s tenth studio album takes on a more uplifting tone. While there are still moments of serious, dark contemplation (consider ‘Hunting Season’s exploration of internet culture and the spread of animosity, or the quiet yet grand realization in ‘Goodbye’), overall, these tracks—both in lyrics and sound—urge us to navigate through darkness in order to embrace life and cherish our loved ones more closely. From the swirling refrain of ‘Shot One’ with its message of “You only get one shot / And that’s what makes it serious” to the piano-driven melody of the closing track ‘Two People In Love’, which transitions into a beautiful, soaring chorus (“Two people in love / Is a world in one”), ‘Futique’ is a daring album that—much like its central theme of ‘future antique’—draws from Biffy’s history, all aimed at safeguarding their future.
