Shirley Manson has stated that the "thievery of the record industry" will put an end to Garbage's touring endeavors.
The enduring band is currently on an extensive tour across the United States, performing at some of the largest venues they've ever visited. However, Garbage has suggested that this might be their last tour of such magnitude, mentioning that they are "unlikely to perform in many of the cities" on this tour "ever again."
During a concert at The Anthem in Washington DC on Wednesday (September 17th), Shirley Manson addressed the audience, discussing the challenges of being a creative entity in the record industry.
“As a band, we’ve decided that, primarily due to the economics of the music industry, we need to limit our headline touring activities,” she expressed. “The thievery of the record industry has made touring extremely difficult.”
“We’re not complaining, we’ve had an amazing journey. I bring this up solely because I am concerned for young musicians who tour; they juggle jobs, take two weeks off, and travel across the country. They often sleep in their vans or stay in really sketchy motels, which is unsafe and completely unacceptable, and it really needs to change. Whatever is happening, it must come to an end. It poses risks and is not acceptable.”
“We have decided that the economics have become unsustainable, so this is likely the last time we will tour all over North America. It is a wonderful privilege and a beautiful experience. And it feels even more significant knowing we probably won’t do a tour of this size again.”
She added: “We all feel incredibly privileged and have experienced amazing support from our fans, from you. At times in the music industry, we’ve been told we’re old, irrelevant, that nobody cares, that no one wants to play our music on the radio or interview us. And then you showed up, saying, ‘get behind us, Satan.’ We will always remember that.”
The band then raised their drinks in a toast to the audience, with Shirley Manson expressing: “We want to toast to your incredible collective health. We’re not sure if we will see you again; maybe we will, maybe we won’t. But we all wish you good health and happiness. Stay kind, adventurous, and curious, ask many questions, surround yourselves with beautiful animals and genuinely good people. And if there are toxic people in your lives, let them go. If they are great people, here’s to you.”
