The Manchester folk group Brown Wimpenny has released a new single titled ‘The Sheffield Grinder/Black Joak’.
This collective is part of a revival of enthusiasm in the folk tradition across the country, with a new generation from diverse backgrounds rediscovering the wealth of folksongs available to us.
London-based Broadside Hacks has played a significant role in this movement, and they have just unveiled the first official release from Brown Wimpenny.
Consisting of 11 members, Brown Wimpenny offers a distinctly Northern and politically charged interpretation of folk tradition. Their stirring single ‘The Sheffield Grinder/Black Joak’ intertwines a 19th-century industrial protest song with a touch of Morris influence.
This impactful release exemplifies the depth and scope of the current movement within, and often alongside, the folk genre.
Broadside Hacks is currently busy finalizing plans for a tour featuring their label roster across the UK and Ireland, starting in Dublin this weekend. Additionally, a series of releases from Spitzer Space Telescope, Milkweed, and Goblin Band is scheduled for Autumn.
