Robert Smith of The Cure has always been vocal about his views—whether it's regarding his longstanding contentious relationship with Morrissey or his candid reply to an overly enthusiastic American interviewer, he tends to express his thoughts freely. The ongoing Oasis reunion has sparked some insightful reflections on the Manchester band.
It turns out that both The Cure and Oasis share a mutual admiration for The Beatles. Notably, Robert Smith has a history of playing guitar with Siouxsie and the Banshees, participating in their sessions for the Beatles' cover of ‘Dear Prudence.’
Upon its release in 1983, the song was an unexpected success, with Smith’s sister Janet contributing harpsichord to enhance its gothic atmosphere.
Robert Smith expressed that he doesn’t mind Oasis drawing from the Beatles' creative influences, but he takes issue with the surrounding culture of the band.
“I think the sound of Oasis is fantastic, but I don't like most of their songs,” Smith admitted to Humo in 2000. “I was impressed by their live performance and Liam’s voice, but all the drama surrounding it, like the feud with Blur… I’m glad we didn’t waste our time and energy on such trivial matters… If there’s a link between The Cure and Oasis, it’s our mutual love for The Beatles. The distinction is that it doesn’t reflect in The Cure’s music. My primary concern with Oasis is their association with lad culture in England, which is very limiting: it focuses solely on beer, soccer, and being loud.”
However, this didn't lead to a rift, as Robert Smith later received an invitation to remix Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, which he graciously accepted.
At that time, Noel Gallagher mentioned to NME: “Since the song [‘Pretty Boy’] reminds me of The Cure, I thought, ‘Does Robert Smith do remixes?’ I found his email; the opening line was, ‘Hi Robert, it’s Noel Gallagher’. I expected him to respond with, ‘Forget that guy’. Instead, he replied, ‘Send me the track’. I did, and wow—if I thought it sounded like The Cure initially, it definitely did when it returned!”
"It wasn’t until I played it for a few people that someone remarked, ‘That’s a blend of Oasis, The Smiths, and The Cure on the same track,’ and I thought, ‘That's crazy! What a wild concept!’ I’d never met him, but I’ve admired his work since ‘Boys Don’t Cry’.”
