"I just wanna get out of my head, get into my heart, get into your bed." Asha Banks opens up with this vulnerable line, transforming desire into heartfelt poetry – raw, illuminating, and unfiltered, welcoming us into a realm where longing and sincerity merge into a stunning admission. Certain songs feel like they were penned in the hushed confines of a diary, softly spoken in secret and never intended for others to hear – yet “Rerun” completely invites us in. Asha Banks unveils her innermost thoughts in this captivating, soul-revealing ballad, with her voice close to the mic, almost confessional. Her emotions throb in real time, her words quivering between yearning and restraint as gentle guitars, banjos, and soft percussion rise around her in a slow, breathtaking crescendo. What starts as a subtle stir of feelings soon explodes into vivid color – a mesmerizing, warm, and achingly private daydream that leaves you smiling through the pain.
Released on August 14, 2025, via Island Records, “Rerun” heralds the beginning of a brilliant new chapter for the 21-year-old British singer, songwriter, and actress. It’s the inaugural glimpse of her upcoming sophomore EP, How Real Was It? (set to be released on November 14), and her debut with a major label – a personal and impactful milestone. The track channels the magnetic honesty that characterized her debut EP, Untie My Tongue, transforming it into something freer and more vivid: a sunlit reflection on desire, impulse, and the thrill of yielding to what you know is inadvisable.
“‘Rerun’ is about questioning oneself and what you genuinely want,” Banks shares with Atwood Magazine. “It’s filled with yearning and 'what ifs,' about returning to something you probably shouldn’t. It’s fun and lively while still acknowledging harsh realities. Writing it was an amazing experience, and I’m genuinely excited and proud for its release!”
This tension – between yearning and uncertainty, desire and self-awareness – is what bestows “Rerun” with its enchanting effect. The track effortlessly bridges honesty and playfulness, its sincerity glowing like candlelight. Banks’ delivery is both authentic and illuminating, her storytelling personal yet relatable: A portrayal of surrender, spontaneity, and the complex, beautiful contradictions of yearning for what you know is unwise.
"I just wanna get out of my head, get into my heart, get into your bed,” the chorus poignantly encapsulates the essence of the song, embodying both pain and liberation. “It's about letting go,” Banks explains. “It's about allowing yourself the chance to be spontaneous and perhaps make less-than-ideal decisions. But it's also about understanding the possibilities and permitting yourself to simply let go." You can hear her release in the way she breathes through each chorus as if she's shaking off doubt. The song pulses like a heartbeat learning to trust itself once more, merging hesitation with surrender.
Banks penned “Rerun” earlier this year with producer and collaborator Josh Bruce Williams, who also helped develop her Untie My Tongue EP. Together they cultivated a new vibe – one that feels brighter and bolder, yet retains its intimacy. "It felt like a fun evolution towards a more upbeat direction after Untie My Tongue," she reflects, “but still maintains the same essence and narratives throughout. I couldn't stop listening to it, which I took as a good sign!" That trust in herself translates directly into the music: Dazzling layers of banjo and guitar resonate with life, enveloping her confessional verses in warmth and movement.
As "Rerun" progresses, it uncovers more about Asha herself – an artist unafraid to express both tenderness and introspection, to write instinctively rather than meticulously. "What I appreciate about being at this point in my journey," she comments, "is that I can observe what unfolds without needing to know the direction of each song. It encapsulates my feelings and the reality of what I was experiencing at that time." That openness radiates through her music: honest, unfiltered, and profoundly human.
