Iron Maiden's frontman Bruce Dickinson is a revered figure in the rock and metal scene, having played a key role in elevating the band to global prominence. While he continues to tour extensively – with Iron Maiden hitting the road again next year – the singer took some time to talk about one of his favorite albums with Clash.
The occasion was National Album Day, which took place over the weekend, focusing on classic rock and metal albums, prompting Bruce Dickinson's participation.
He reflected on the past and admitted that Deep Purple’s ‘Live In Japan’ “changed my life.”
He shared his thoughts:
‘Made in Japan’ was likely the second Deep Purple album I heard after ‘Made in Rock,’ and it transformed my existence…it astonished me! I aspired to be everyone in that band… I even blew the speakers on my parents' stereo while playing that record. I knew every note by heart and would bounce around on sofas with a cheap guitar, pretending to be Richie Blackmore, trying to replicate what I imagined he did on stage.
What a revelation it was; I believe it's the greatest live album – the finest rock live album ever created, and it still holds that title! I also had the honor of working with Martin Birch, who shared many stories about its creation… but that's another tale!
