A tender piece of folk-inspired introspection...
Austel has released her delightful new single, ‘The Beach In December’.
The rising songwriter showcases her lyrical talent in this track, weaving a powerful narrative. ‘The Beach In December’ serves as a space for contemplation, allowing Austel to explore the lasting effects of childhood memories.
The song carries a joyful innocence, counterbalanced by a sense of weariness in Austel's vocals. Playing with this juxtaposition, she draws from her personal experiences while employing folk-inspired melodies in ‘The Beach In December’ to tap into universal themes.
She explains: “I went back to the beach in winter (Bon Iver season) and contemplated how our childhood experiences shape our journey through life. I decided to record the whole trip from Brighton beach to the train station, then the train back to London, using a Zoom recorder. I wanted to create a memory for listeners to immerse themselves in for a few minutes – traveling along the beach, on the train with the song. It still brings back many memories – it serves as a time capsule, thanks to the field recordings.”
Austel shot the video with her brother on Brighton beach, adding: “This song holds a very specific sense of place for me, but it’s also about reflection and nostalgia. Therefore, it felt appropriate to retrace the journey in the video.”
