Tiga Selects Seven Definitive "Indie Sleaze" Hits

Tiga has had a dynamic career in club culture, dedicating himself to energizing dancefloors around the world. The Montreal-born artist adds another entry to his impressive discography with ‘HOTLIFE’, a new album set to be released soon on Turbo Recordings/Secret City Records.

By incorporating elements from his celebrated past and merging them with contemporary innovations, he remains faithful to his distinctive style while also exploring new directions.

The new single ‘SILK SCARF’ features Tiga collaborating with New York club disruptors Fcukers, whom he regards as kindred spirits. “They seemed like the only option… I met them, loved them, and reached out,” he shares.

“Their vibe takes me back to the Electroclash Summer of Love (Y2K – present),” Tiga remarks. “Did we care about genre labels? Think again.”

With a punk essence, ‘SILK SCARF’ combines luxurious glamour with a blatant disregard for norms, boldly challenging conventions. “If a bizarre record is good enough, it stops being bizarre and just turns into a party record,” Tiga explains. “And if you’re not here to party, maybe you should go do some homework and get out of my way!”

Inspired, Clash asked Tiga to select seven quintessential “indie sleaze” anthems. While the term is often misapplied, it’s used affectionately here as a retro-fitted label for the genre-blurring, chemically-infused revelry of the 00s.

      Tiga shares:

Seven indie sleaze bangers. I had to look up “indie-sleaze” to see what it meant. It seems to encompass nearly a whole decade… so here it goes.

      Tiga – ‘Shoes‘

In some aspects, our new track ‘SILK SCARF’ reminds me of ‘SHOES’. It's a kind of duet, with groove-driven party energy. Not overly serious, with a new fetish angle, etc...

LCD Soundsystem – ‘Tribulations’ (Tiga Remix)

This was my favorite song from the early LCD days. I felt a bit envious of James for writing it so effortlessly. He invited me to remix it, and I created what I envisioned as a pop-trance-emo analogue techno masterpiece. NY punk + techno, etc.

      —

      Proxy – ‘Raven’

In the post-electro era, there was only one TRUE banger… a track that was truly unmatched. From the best yet most underrated producer of that time: Proxy, the Russian genius. It felt like heavy metal techno.

      —

The Futureheads – ‘Hounds Of Love’ (Phones remix)

Before he produced superstars like Adele, Paul Epsworth, who was known as Phones, was somewhat an “indie-sleaze” adjacent producer.

This was a cover of a Kate Bush song that I often used to close my sets with. It deeply captured the tight-leather-jacket dance scene during its peak years and remains a significant track for me. It’s energetic, fun, and encapsulates that era perfectly. It’s as nostalgic as I get.

      —

Bloc Party – ‘Banquet’ (Boys Noize Remix)

For a time, every one of Alex Boys Noize’s remixes defined what a BANGER was, even before the term was widely used. This one perfectly encapsulates the chaotic, trashy mash-up sound of London that has been retrospectively dubbed Indie-sleaze.

      —

Thomas Anderson – ‘Washing Up’ (Tiga Remix)

Another one of my mixes, not quite as indie... but it marks the beginning of stadium football chant techno bangers. At its time, it was one of the biggest tracks to play, almost a national anthem in Spain.

      —

      Fisherspooner – ‘Emerge’

Even though it’s technically a bit earlier and more electro, I believe ‘Emerge’ was the true start of the fusion between New York punk/art/fashion and dance music, etc. More importantly, it was a significantly large and genuinely original record that still resonates today.
