Gretel, previously known as Gretel Hänlyn, has concluded 2025 with one last new release. The London-based songwriter presents a contemplative new track titled ‘Darkness Be My Friend’, which highlights her talent for crafting beautiful, shadowy pieces that maintain a resilient core. "I wrote ‘Darkness Be My Friend’ the day before we began re-recording my upcoming project in a new, unfamiliar manner – I was frightened and uncertain if I had what it took," Gretel shares about the song. "It was dark yet thrilling. Recording live in this manner pushed me much more as a musician than I had experienced before, and it sparked a strong desire in me to improve and become more inventive in the future. I feel like I've only just come to life." This latest release follows her previous singles, ‘Maybelline’, released in October, and ‘Unbloom’, which came out in June. These three songs continue from her notable 2024 single ‘Far Out’, and have all contributed to defining this new phase of her career. Listen to ‘Darkness Be My Friend’ below.
