The Cribs - Marketing an Atmosphere

The Cribs are the iconic indie rock band of brothers for their generation, but have they ever sounded as much like a family as they do on their eighth album? It's hard to believe that the Jarmans—singing twins Gary and Ryan, who play bass and guitar respectively, along with Ross on drums—could have faced any significant personal challenges with one another this time. After all, their strong connection has always been central to the band, and they seemed closer than ever on 2020’s ‘Night Network,’ which solidified their status as indie stalwarts after years of complex legal struggles. However, this time, after two decades of presenting a united front against pretenders and industry nonsense, they've turned their focus inward to reflect on the bonds that hold them together. Musically, one of The Cribs’ notable achievements in recent years has been not only surviving the rough-and-ready indie scene of the noughties but doing so with grace, moving away from their former punky chaos towards melody and romanticism in albums like ‘For All My Sisters’ and ‘Night Network.’ While ‘Selling a Vibe’ continues in this direction—especially evident in the beautiful, self-reflective ‘Looking for the Wrong Guy’ and the dreamy ‘Distractions’—it also includes elements of their earlier boisterousness, with tracks like ‘A Point Too Hard to Make’ and ‘I’ll Tell You Anything’ likely to become raucous singalong favorites. The album, produced by Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, wraps up with the uplifting ‘Brothers Won’t Break,’ a heartening reaffirmation of the Jarman bond and a powerful message to the Cribs' loyal fans that they continue to be one of the most energetically vital bands in Britain.
