The UK shoegaze band deary is set to release their debut album, ‘Birding’, on April 3rd.
Their early releases demonstrated remarkable potential, leading to deary gaining recognition as the primary tour support for shoegaze legends Slowdive.
After signing with Bella Union, which also represents Beach House, the band is excited to launch their debut album ‘Birding’ this Spring.
Scheduled for release on April 3rd, with pre-orders available now, the band will host a special Rough Trade out-store performance on the release day at London’s Lower Third.
Comprising Ben Easton (guitar), Dottie Cockram (vocals, guitar), and Harry Catchpole (drums), the trio has revealed the complete tracklist, with the album title reflecting a fascination with birds.
Singer/guitarist Dottie shares, “I became really interested in reading about birds and the historical tales and poetry surrounding them. You find beautiful imagery of birds representing hope, yet they are also animals. Some, like vultures and crows, symbolize death for certain people. They embody various elements, which I believe encapsulate much of the album.”
Ben elaborates, “The album explores human consequences—those we impose on one another, our own minds, mental health, and nature. A tangible idea for us is that humans have the most significant impact on innocent, vulnerable, sentient beings, like birds, for instance. This ties into the vulnerability of our inner selves or the child within us, reflected in the album art featuring a child attempting to fly. It feels ethereal but also carries many sorrowful undertones.”
Their new single ‘Seabird’ exemplifies this beautifully—with delicate melodies and a layered noise-pop guitar, it becomes a shimmering piece of elusive beauty.
According to deary, the song “is like a fable, a narrative of someone imploring a powerful bird, asking, ‘when will it improve?’ We aimed to convey that sense of grandeur, feeling small in the grand scheme of things. In that respect, it serves as the ideal introduction to the rest of the album…”
